Job Description

The Residential Counselor provides appropriate role modeling in a trauma-informed therapeutic environment that promotes the physical, mental and behavioral health of each resident and assists residents in developing life skills. The Residential Counselor works as a part of a collaborative trauma informed therapeutic team, establishing open communications and support among co-workers. The team is comprised of clinical and non-clinical staff in the residential program. The Residential Counselor is directly responsible for the supervision of clients and the coordination and execution of their day-to-day activities and treatment plans as directed. The Residential Counselor is directly accountable to the Program Manager who provides supervision and training. Due to the nature of the work and client needs, the Residential Counselor is considered a direct care position.

  • Responsible for the overall care of the residents; i.e. health and hygiene, education and social/emotional well-being while on duty or otherwise with clients in any off-shift or volunteer capacity
  • Cultivate a trauma-informed environment by: understanding the short and long-term impacts of trauma and neglect; responding to the residents and their family/caretakers with empathy, sensitivity, and respect and; maintaining trauma-sensitive language and approaches in all interactions.
  • Collaborate in a consistent manner, as a member of the therapeutic staff team in exercising responsibilities and in such a way as to reinforce the residential philosophy and program protocols.
  • Supervise the interactions and activities of residents. Actively engage in day-to-day structured and unstructured recreational activities and life skill development and maintenance.
  • Implement both agency and individualized behavior management practices utilizing appropriate trauma-sensitive techniques to monitor, assess and document situations and client status.
  • Implement crisis intervention techniques in accordance with policy, procedure and agency training and ensure that non-violent physical interventions are implemented only in the event that a client is an immediate risk to self or others.


  • Bachelor s degree in social work, health, human services, education, psychology or related field, + 3 months of human service experience, particularly with children and/or adolescents or
  • Associates degree or 2 years of equivalent college experience + 6 months of human service experience, particularly with children and/or adolescents, or
  • High School diploma + 12 months of human service experience, particularly with children and/or adolescents
  • Must be at least 21 years old
  • Must meet the following driving standards:
    • Must hold a valid driver s license for at least 3 years.
    • Does not have more than two (2) moving violations in the last three (3) years
    • Does not have more than one (1) at fault accident in the last three (3) years
    • Does not have any Serious Violation in the last three years
